Arlington Red-Light Cameras Get the Green

Drivers in Arlington, Va., be warned, four red-light cameras were turned on at 12:01 a.m. Monday.

The cameras are at four of Arlington's busiest intersections.

Drivers will get a 30-day grace period, but after that, it's a $50 fine for running a red light.

The intersections are:

  • Lee Highway and North Lynn Street
  • Fort Meyer Drive and Lee Highway
  • Lee Highway and Washington Boulevard
  • North Glebe Road and Fairfax Drive

The effectiveness of red-light cameras is still up for debate. Arlington police say the cameras reduce crashes by 40 percent at intersections where they're placed, WAMU reported. But a report by the Virginia Transportation Research Council found that rear-end crashes at those intersections increase.
