High Levels of Carbon Monoxide Detected at Maryland Apartment Complex

Residents of a Montgomery County apartment building are back in their homes after high carbon monoxide levels were detected on several floors.

Fire department spokesman Pete Piringer said the 17-story Forum Apartments were evacuated early Tuesday morning. The building is located in the 11800 block of Rockville Pike.

According to Piringer, the gas company was called to the complex Monday night after a carbon monoxide detector went off inside a unit. A problem with the apartment's stove was repaired, and no one was evacuated.

Tuesday morning, another carbon monoxide detector went off. The fire department was called to the scene this time and got a high carbon monoxide reading on several floors.

A faulty water heater in the basement was determined to be the cause, Piringer said. Renonvation work inside the building allowed the carbon monoxide to travel up a pipe shaft to the upper floors.

The floors were ventilated and cleared by Montgomery County Fire while medics evaluated the residents.

No injuries were reported.
