And the Teaching Award Goes to…

Local teacher honored

The Milken Family Foundation Educator Award is like winning an Oscar in the teaching world. A Fairfax County biology teacher joined the ranks of honorees Wednesday morning during a surprise assembly.

Ann Lam Wong teaches Advanced Placement biology at West Springfield High School. She's taught for 15 years, and with her help the school has expanded the number of AP Bio classes from 1 to 3.

The Milken Foundation recognized her for her commitment to helping students achieve excellence. Along with the prestige, Wong will also receive a check for $25,000.

After her name was announced, a tearful Wong stood up to accept her award. "It's always been about my students, and I come here every day for you," she said.

Over the years the Milken Foundation has given out more than $60 million to more than 2,400 educators across the country. Wong is the second Virginia teacher to be honored this year.

Wong is no stranger to recognition. She was chosen by students, staff and the community as the Teacher of the Year and was recognized by "Who's Who Among America's Teachers." Wong was also a finalist for the Washington Post's Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award and a nominee for the Disney American Teacher Award.
