Amtrak, MARC Service Delayed After Person Struck, Killed by Train

An Amtrak train hit and killed a person on the tracks near Landover, Maryland, Monday night, delaying service for Amtrak and MARC passengers.

A spokesperson for Amtrak said train 861 was going from Philadelphia to D.C. about 8:20 p.m. when it struck a trespasser on the tracks north of Landover.

No one on the train was injured.

Passengers had to move to a different train to complete their trip.

"This is an opportunity to remind the public about the importance of exercising caution around railroad tracks and crossings," the spokesperson said in a statement. "Each year, about 2,000 people are killed or injured in grade crossing and trespassing incidents nationwide."

It's not clear why the person was on the tracks.

Amtrak tweeted that some trains traveling through D.C. were delayed.

MARC cancelled two of its trains due to the fatal crash and said there were major delays on its Penn Line.
