An American University student died Thursday, days after being hit by a car in Friendship Heights, police said.
Kenneth Clarke, of Bothell, Wash., a first-year student in the School of International Service, died from a brain injury. He was 19.
Clarke was crossing Western Avenue near the Friendship Heights shopping center when a car struck him about 10:25 p.m. on March 27, police said. The driver of the car stayed on the scene.
D.C. Fire and EMS took Clarke to the hospital.
He died more than a week later, on Thursday, of a severe traumatic brain injury and brain bleed, according to a statement released by American University.
In the school's statement, they remind students affected by the tragedy that the counseling center has drop-in hours on weekdays. The counseling center staff is available Friday for those who need to be in community to grieve, the statement said.
The university also has other resources for people who need support at this time. The Kay Spiritual Life Center chaplains are available to assist students, faculty and staff.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 8 at 4 p.m. in the Kay Chapel at American University.
