Amazon Books Store Headed to Georgetown

Amazon, the giant online retailer that some say drove many chain bookstores out of business, is opening its own bookstore in Georgetown.

The company has told investors that it has leased a 10,000-square-foot location at 3040 M Street, according to a report in The Washington Post.

That is the same block where Barnes and Noble once had a bookstore.

The company has opened Amazon Books stores throughout the country, including in San Diego, Chicago and the Boston area.

It has plans for stores in New York City, including across from the Empire State Building, and in New Jersey.

The stores sell books and Amazon devices. The books are chosen based on Amazon reviews, the company has said, as well as staff selections.

The stores also integrate with the Amazon app, so that shoppers can see reviews and other information about the products for sale. The company is experimenting with technology that allows customers to pay with the app, too, CNBC reports -- scanning a book and walking out of the store without stopping at a counter.

This is part of a brick-and-mortar expansion for the company that includes pick-up locations for products bought online, such as the one the company recently opened in College Park.
