All Lanes to Open Monday on Legion Bridge

Additional lane may be shut down this weekend

CABIN JOHN -- An additional lane maybe shut down this weekend along the inner loop of the Capital Beltway on the American Legion Bridge

The left lane of the heavily traveled bridge was closed Wednesday after cracks were discovered throughout a steel beam that is part of the bridge structure.

A Maryland State Highway Administration spokesman said it plans to have all lanes open by Monday.

Spokesman Dave Buck told WTOP Radio that for the agency, which is trying to catch these infrastructure problems as early as possible, it's more like "filling a cavity rather than pulling a tooth."

The 45-year-old bridge connects Maryland and Virginia and crosses the Potomac River near Washington.

Bridges in Maryland are inspected at least once every two years.
