Alexandria Water Main Break Strands Hundreds Without Water

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Crews are working to repair a water main break that left hundreds of Alexandria residents without water service and shut down a road.

A 12-inch main broke on South Reynolds Street early Wednesday, the city said, leaving about 600 people without water. Virginia American Water sent crews to the scene and repairs are expected to take at least eight hours to complete. A section of the road near Duke Street will remain closed until repairs are done.

Commuters should use other routes, officials said.

The cause of the break will not be known until after workers excavate the broken main, the water company said.
