Alexandria City Council Picks Potomac Yards Metro Station Location

The Metro’s Yellow and Blue lines are getting a new dot on the map.

Alexandria City Council approved the location for the new Potomac Yard Metrorail Station Wednesday. The station will sit between the George Washington Parkway and the CSX railroad tracks north of the Potomac Greens neighborhood, east of the existing Potomac Yard Shopping Center.

On the Metro, the stop will lie between the Braddock Road and Reagan National Airport stations.

The new station is estimated to cost $268 million. The project is being funded primarily through grants, developer contributions, a special tax district revenue and other non-city sources.

The new location is expected to support up to 26,000 new jobs within a quarter mile of the station and 13,000 new residents within one-half mile. These new developments around the station are planned to help pay for the new Metrorail stop.

The city council also anticipates less congestion on the Route 1 corridor.
