VRE trains are currently backed up at Union Station after a barricade in Alexandria stopped CSX and VRE trains earlier this afternoon. However, trains are running again, and VRE is hopeful that once the first few trains get through, service should begin running smoothly again.

However, riders should assume some residual delays are at least possible into the evening.

The barricade developed when a deputy sheriff tried serving an eviction notice at an apartment in the 4800 block of Eisenhower Avenue, police said. After knocking on the, door the deputy heard gunfire from inside.

No injuries have been reported and the apartment building has not been evacuated, but CSX and VRE decided to temporarily stop service on nearby tracks.

A negotiations team has been called to the scene, and police are in contact with the person inside.

VRE said on its Web site earlier that it recommended that riders look for alternative ways home, if possible. Because it is rush hour, VRE is having difficulty getting buses. Trains 335 and 311 have been canceled.

Travelers who need to go through the Alexandria VRE train station can also take the Metro blue line to the Franconia-Springfield station, and transfer onto the VRE Fredericksburg line there.
