Airman Surprises Son's Class With Story Via Skype From Afghanistan

A preschool story time turned into the surprise of a lifetime for one Virginia boy.

Five-year-old Grayson Combs walked into his pre-K classroom Wednesday and almost couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw his deployed dad on the projector screen. Air Force Lt. Col. Randy Combs is currently stationed in Afghanistan, but thanks to Skype, he led his son’s preschool story time, delighting everyone at Springfield-based Kinder Care.

“We thought it would be really special,” said Kinder Care’s Trisha Jennings.

The Air Force Logistics Coordinator read “The Tail of Peter Rabbit” to the room full of smiling students. Not only was Combs’ appearance a great treat for Grayson, it was a way for the school to incorporate technology into literacy and support its military families.

Combs is on his fourth deployment and hasn’t seen his family since Christmas. His wife Kelly helped set up the story time surprise, giving Grayson a day at school he’ll never forget.
