Protesters Want Saudia Arabia to Allow Women to Drive

Women's rights protest at Saudi Embassy in NW Washington.

A parade of cars will be circling the Saudi Embassy in northwest Washington today. But this is no celebration. In an unusual protest, women plan to drive around the building on New Hampshire Avenue to protest the kingdom’s ban on female drivers.

The Institute for Gulf Affairs, which is sponsoring Wednesday's rally, accuses Saudi Arabia of a system of "gender apartheid" that oppresses women. The institute says one of the most noticeable examples is refusing to allow women behind the wheel.

The protest will run from noon to 4 p.m. outside the embassy in Foggy Bottom. It is designed to coincide with a protest planned Friday inside the kingdom itself.
