About 8% of County Residents Elect Bulova to Fairfax Board Chair

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Democrat Sharon Bulova has been certified as the winner of a special election to replace Gerry Connolly as chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, the largest local government in Virginia.

Bulova, a supervisor in the county's Braddock District, narrowly defeated Republican Pat Herrity, a supervisor in the Springfield District on Tuesday.

Bulova won 50 percent of the vote, and Herrity had 49 percent. Herrity conceded defeat Wednesday afternoon.

About 16 percent of the county's eligible voters cast ballots in Tuesday's election.

Bulova succeeds Connolly, a Democrat who was elected to Congress in November.
