Abandoned Baby's Mother Arrested

Newborn died after being found in a bag

TAKOMA PARK, Md. -- The mother of a newborn girl found in a bag in an overgrown field in Prince George's County over the weekend has been arrested and charged.

Workers clearing the field near the 6300 block of New Hampshire Avenue found the infant alive, but she died about an hour later at an area hospital. She had been alive for about seven hours, police said.

A tip from the public led detectives to the child's 25-year-old mother, Wendy Yanette Villatoro, police said.

Villatoro confessed to giving birth to the girl and leaving her where she was found, police said.

The medical examiner determined the death to be a homicide caused by the child being left outside in the elements, police said. Villatoro was charged with second-degree murder.
