A northern Virginia woman has received her high school diploma this weekend after waiting 75 years for the honor.
Jane Pickett, who lives in Burke, Virginia, also turned 93, and celebrated the milestones with her family and friends.
She was supposed to graduate in 1939 from her high school in the New York area. But Pickett fell in love with her high school sweetheart.
“I got married the same day I would have graduated from high school,” Pickett said.
Her daughter surprised her with an honorary diploma from the school this weekend after reaching out to the school.
“All the neighbors came over and she had absolutely no idea,” said Sharon Mills, Pickett's daughter. “Cousins came into town. Kids came home from college. But she had absolutely no idea this is what we were doing for her."
The school sent the diploma with a graduation sash and other gifts.
