A 92-year-old woman's death in District Heights, Md., is being called a homicide, and Prince George's County police are searching for more clues.
Neighbors called Thelma Steele's daughter because mail was piling up at her home in the 2900 block of East Avenue, News4's Tracee Wilkins reported. Steele's daughter hadn't heard from her mother in a few days and called police to check on her. When they arrived about 8:30 p.m. Monday, they found Steele had suffered blunt force trauma to the body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
"We are appalled by this terrible act of violence," Police Chief Mark Magaw said. "It is unthinkable to imagine that someone would prey on a senior member of our community, and we vow to bring to justice the person or persons responsible.”
The body has been sent for an autopsy.
Police did not say whether there was any sign of forced entry to the home, Wilkins reported.
Steele lived in the neighborhood more than 50 years, neighbors said. Her husband died many years ago.
