91 Arrested at White House for Protesting Nursing Homes

Protesters lacked proper permit

WASHINGTON -- In protest news unrelated to Darfur or the environment, U.S. Park Police arrested 91 protesters in front of the White House, including some in wheelchairs who chained themselves to a fence, authorities said.

The protesters are calling on the president to support legislation that would give people with disabilities in need of long-term care alternatives to nursing homes.

A large group gathered on a sidewalk outside the White House on Monday without a protest permit required for groups of more than 25 demonstrators, Sgt. David Schlosser said.

Some protesters in wheelchairs chained themselves to a fence, Schlosser said. Police may use a bolt-cutter to cut the chains.

The protesters are receiving written citations from officers but are not being handcuffed or taken to a detention facility.
