Man, 82, Struck and Killed by Tractor-Trailer as He Tried to Cross Capital Beltway

A man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer Saturday after he tried to cross the northbound lanes of the Capital Beltway in Fairfax County.

Barrington Holt, 82, of Falls Church, was driving north on I-495 when his vehicle struck a concrete barrier and then the guardrail, police said in a statement. Holt got out of his vehicle and was attempting to cross the highway when he was struck, Virginia State Police said.

The crash happened at 12:30 a.m. Saturday less than a mile south of Route 7.

The driver of the tractor-trailer tried to avoid Holt by braking, but was unable to avoid striking him. Holt died at the scene, according to the statement.

A second tractor-trailer crashed into the first truck, but neither tractor-trailer driver was injured, police said.

Police are investigating the fatal crash.
