An 8-year-old boy has died after an ATV on which he was riding flipped over in Temple Hills, Maryland, according to police.
Kemel Bonilla-Reyes, of Temple Hills, died Sept. 3, two days after the incident, Prince George's County Police said Friday.
However, the boy's grandfather told NBC4's sister station Telemundo 44 that Bonilla-Reyes remained on life support and was brain dead. As his family planned for a Friday night vigil at their church, they said they were hoping for a miracle.
The boy was injured as a 15-year-old boy drove the ATV in a cul-de-sac in the 5000 block of Janis Lane, police said. Bonilla-Reyes and another 8-year-old boy were riding on the ATV; police believe Bonilla-Reyes was sitting on the gas tank and holding onto the handlebars when the ATV flipped.
A relative drove the boy to a hospital in the District. Due to his injuries, he was transferred to Children's National Medical Center, where police say he died.
"This is a tragic situation. We are going to get to the bottom of what happened and how it happened. These off road vehicles are a danger to the community and, as I have stressed so often, off road vehicles being driven on county roadways are an extreme danger to those riding them, and it is illegal," said Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski in a release.
Prince George's County Police said they were not notified of the crash at the time it happened and weren't called to respond to the original incident. D.C. police notified them of the boy's death on Sept. 3, Prince George's County Police said.

They are investigating. Detectives found and impounded the ATV for investigation.
