5-Story Building Going Up Towers Over NW DC Neighborhood, Drawing Complaints From Neighbors

A five-story building going up in a Northwest D.C. neighborhood is drawing complaints for towering over its neighbors.

The building in the 1200 block of Kennedy Street NW is extremely different in size and style from other homes in the neighborhood.

"It's an eyesore, too," said Deborah Powell, who lives nearby.

"I would prefer it to just be a regular, one-family home," another resident said.

Powell feels the same.

"It does not fit in the neighborhood," she said. "It really doesn't, and I think it’s really an injustice to the neighbors. It really is. And who would approve something like this?"

The city did. The designs have been approved and reapproved. Current zoning laws allow for the home to reach 50 feet into the air.

"This is really wrong," Powell said. "It's a bad decision."

In addition to the height, there are concerns about the construction itself, whether it's over-excavation, foundation damage or trash. The developer said he's done everything by the book and has tried to mitigate those concerns, but that hasn't stopped accusations that he's a bad neighbor.

"It's always going to be that house on the block," a resident said. "It's going to be really hard to get used to."

The developer disagrees, noting Kennedy Street is sprinkled with similar structures he's built.

The D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs is aware of the complaints but has not responded to News4's request for comment about them.
