NBC Universal, Inc.

Four men were wounded, including one man with critical injuries, after a drive-by shooting on North Capitol Street in D.C. on Thursday afternoon, authorities say.

A shooting investigation was underway in the 1200 block of North Capitol Street, just south of New York Avenue NW. A number of first responders could be seen.

A bullet narrowly missed hitting a man who uses a wheelchair. It instead hit a small speaker he had tucked under his arm.

“I’m lucky!” he repeated.

Officers were called to the rapidly changing area at about 1:10 p.m. They found four men with gunshot wounds, who all were taken to hospitals, First District Cmdr. Tasha Bryant said. One man had critical injuries; the other three had less serious injuries.

The men are a 21-year-old who was shot in the back, a 27-year-old who was shot in the groin, a 28-year-old who was shot in the buttocks and a 36-year-old who was shot in the arm, a source familiar with the investigation said.

The shooter or shooters appear to have opened fire from a car, Bryant said. Police are seeking a white Kia Forte with a single New York tag of KSM6977 on the rear that may have two people inside.

The shooting comes just days after a 22-year-old man was shot and killed in the same block. Antonio Waller died after being shot there on Sunday at about noon.

Multiple people were shot in two incidents on Aug. 24 within blocks of Thursday’s shooting. An afternoon shooting at North Capitol and O streets killed two men and wounded three other people. A shooting that night on Quincy Place NE wounded two men. Chief of Police Robert Contee described the second shooting as possible retaliation for the first

It wasn't immediately clear if the shooting Thursday was connected to any prior shootings, Bryant said.
