Montgomery County May Pay for Early Retirement

Some see it as a win-win. A Montgomery County program would offer government employees $35,000 to retire early, the Gazette reported.

It could save the county a lot of money if those spots are not refilled over the next three years, officials said.

Because it’s unclear how many workers would take them up on the offer, there is no way of knowing just how much it would save the county.

County Executive Ike Leggett proposed the idea to reduce the need for layoffs in the fiscal 2011 budget. His budget proposal calls for as many as 232 layoffs.

A similar idea has been pitched before. The County Council did not approve a retirement incentive plan last year. Leggett’s 2010 retirement proposal is the subject of a lawsuit that the union for county employees filed.
