The boy suffered injuries that are not life-threatening, police say

A man shot and killed his in-laws and injured an 11-year-old boy in Charles County, Maryland, before killing himself, authorities say.

The Charles County Sheriff's Office said 42-year-old Mark McKinley Hughes Jr. went to the home of Vickie Danita Pickeral, 54, and Gregory Bruce Pickeral, 53, late Friday night and shot the couple.

The Pickerals both died from their injuries. They were the grandparents of Hughes' children, authorities said.

After the shooting, more relatives drove to the home on Bensville Road in Pomfret, a town of less than 600 residents.

Hughes shot at their car as they drove in, injuring an 11-year-old boy, the sheriff's office said. The boy ran away from the scene of the shooting, and was later treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

A woman in the car was also hurt, but not shot, authorities said.

Hughes fled the home in a car and later crashed in La Plata, the sheriff's office said. He was found dead inside the crashed car. The sheriff's office said he shot himself.

Police are trying to determine a motive.
