Toddler Falls From Third Floor Window and Survives

A 2-year-old boy who fell three stories by slipping through an open window's torn screen is expected to be okay.

The toddler fell 30 feet out of his parents' Sterling apartment home Monday. When crews arrived to rescue him, he was bleeding from the mouth and was unconscious but breathing. Officials say it appeared as though the child was leaning onto the window screen when it gave way.

Tim Menzenwerth with Loudoun County Fire and Rescue recommends parents keep furniture away from windows.

"Children will crawl on it and climb it," he said. "Keep those windows closed. If you really want the window open, only open it enough so that if the child were to crawl through they couldn’t [fit], so just a couple inches to get a little bit of air."
