3-Year-Old Boy Dies After SUV Hits Him in Rockville Parking Lot: Police

A 3-year-old boy has died after an SUV struck him in Rockville, Maryland, Tuesday, police say.

Montgomery County police said the child, Antonia Martinez Cruz, was running across the parking lot outside Sandy Spring Bank near Rockville Pike and Dodge Street just before 4 p.m. when a 2010 Ford Explorer struck him.

The boy's parents were in a parked car when the boy took off running, police said.

Police said Cruz was trapped under the SUV before he was taken to a hospital with critical injuries. He succumbed to those injuries a short time later.

The driver, 44-year-old Pedro Zavala Leal, stayed at the scene.

Multiple officers were at the scene and taped off an area surrounding the silver Ford Explorer.

Police are still investigating the crash.
