Two people have died after a three-vehicle accident caused a car fire on the Wilson Bridge early Saturday morning.
Police say that the accident occurred at around 2:50 a.m. in the bridge's local northbound lanes near the Maryland side. Investigators say that a 2009 Dodge rear-ended a 2010 Chevrolet before ricocheting into the rear of a tractor trailer and bursting into flames.
According to police, the driver of the Dodge and the front seat passenger were trapped in the car and pronounced dead at the scene, while a third occupant of the car was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet, 24-year-old New Jersey native Richard Alvarez, was not injured. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 66-year-old Virginian Francis Donelson, was also transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
All northbound lanes on the Wilson Bridge were closed as a result of the accident. Currently, all through lanes and all southbound lanes are open. All but one local northbound lane remains closed. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
