Two men accused of tree-cutting scheme targeting elderly homeowners reached plea deals in their cases.
Michael Jackson and his company, Savannah's Tree & Yard Experts, took thousands of dollars for tree removal jobs they didn't finish and tricked elderly homeowners into paying for roofing services they didn't need, police said.
Rose Mikus was one of those homeowners. She said John Walker tried to get her to pay $14,000 to fix her roof. She said when she called another company for a second opinion, she was told her roof never had any damage.
Jackson told News4 he didn’t know Walker or Mikus. He also said he was a licensed contractor, but it turns out he wasn’t.
This week, Jackson pleaded no contest to a charge of working without the proper license. He was sentenced to 12 months in jail with all the time suspended.
Walker was facing four charges, but as part of his plea deal, prosecutors dismissed three of them. Walker is expected to plead guilty to a felony charge next month. He will be ordered to pay restitution to Mikus and one other victim, and a judge will decide whether he serves any jail time.
