2 Killed in I-70 Pileup

I-70 West closed

MYERSVILLE, Md. -- Two people are dead after a snowy pileup on Interstate 70 west of Myersville near South Mountain, Maryland State Police said.

The crash involved at least 35 passenger vehicles and five tractor-trailers, police said.

Forty-five people were taken to a Red Cross shelter by bus. One person was critically injured and taken to an area hospital. More than a dozen others were injured as well.

The westbound lanes of the highway are closed. They are not expected to reopen until after rush hour.

The accident occurred at about 12:20 or 12:30 p.m., a spokeswoman at Maryland State Police headquarters said. The westbound lanes were closed at Exit 42, and traffic was being directed to U.S. Route 40.

Snow is falling across central Maryland. It was at least partly to blame for the crash.
