17-Year-Old Boy Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in Gainesville

Prince William County police are searching for a car that fatally struck a 17-year-old boy in Gainesville, Virginia, before driving away early Saturday morning.

The teenage boy, a family member and another person were finishing work on a driveway in the area of Sudley and Catharpin roads when the crash happened at about 2:29 a.m.

Just before the crash, the teen and his relative were sitting in a work truck that was parked facing the wrong way on Sudley Road. Police say the truck's headlights were on, but no one was wearing reflective vests and no roadway signs were placed along the street to warn drivers of the obstruction.

A white sedan traveling westbound approached the truck, and fearing there would be a collision, the teen and relative jumped out. The family member was able to get out of the roadway safely, but the teen was struck when the car swerved to avoid the truck.

Police say the car stopped momentarily before driving away.

The teen, who police say was from Maryland, died at the scene.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police at 703-792-6500.
