Five barns burned and some domesticated animals died after a fire ignited on the Charles County Fairgrounds Tuesday afternoon, authorities say.

It took 150 firefighters more than two hours to extinguish the blaze, said Deputy Chief Jim Duer. of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire broke out at about 3:30 p.m.

According to the Charles County Fair Board, the fairgrounds lost its Livestock Show Ring and all attached Livestock Barns. The La Plata, Md., entertainment site will stay open and continue to run its other exhibits.
