Gerald Watson, of Southeast D.C., was named by police on Friday as the victim.

About 3:30 p.m. Thursday two suspects wearing masks chased the teen into a stairwell at the Langston Lane Apartments on Knox Place SE and shot him multiple times, police said.

Watson was conscious and breathing when he was taken to the hospital with grave injuries, police said earlier Thursday. He died a short time later.

Some residents told News4 they heard as many as 16 shots fired.

"Who's going to shoot a kid? This is the holiday season. You know, it's supposed to be a celebratory time, and we're out here with a young kid and a family that's devastated," D.C. police chief Peter Newsham said.

Residents said the neighborhood is dangerous.

"This area is known to be, I guess, violent," one woman said.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the area.

The hunt for the masked shooters continued Friday morning as Anacostia High students went to class without their classmate.

"It's very, very sad," said parent Robin Johnson. "Don't judge this school from what happens outside. The inside of this school is great."

"Inside of those walls, they care so much," Johnson said.

Grief counselors were at the school to help students.
