15-Year-Old Charged in 92-Year-Old's Death

A teenager is charged in the death of a 92-year-old woman found in her home Monday night.

Police found Thelma Steele in her home in the 2900 block of East Avenue in District Heights, Md., after neighbors noticed mail piling up and contacted her daughter, who asked police to check on her mother. Steele was pronounced dead at the scene.

William Roger Fitts, 15, is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder. He was the victim’s neighbor.

Prince George’s County police questioned William extensively and said he confessed to stabbing Steele, News4's Darcy Spencer reported. The motive was robbery, according to police. William allegedly used Steele's credit card to make purchases online.

William said he was the only person involved, police said.

Police also said they recovered the knife he used.

In court Thursday, William was ordered held without bond. He faces up to life in prison.

Steele had lived in the home for more than 50 years, neighbors said.
