Loudoun County Animal Services seized 10 dogs from two men traveling on the Dulles Greenway on Friday, authorities said Monday.
The dogs appeared to be pit bulls or pit bull mixes.
An Animal Control Officer stopped to assist two men who were holding a puppy on the shoulder of the Dulles Greenway near Shreve Mill Road.
The officer discovered that they actually had 10 dogs with the, "of varying ages and degrees of health," authorities said. They believe the men were bring the dogs through Virginia from several other states.
Tremain Dene Johnson, 44, of Georgia, and Harry Ortice Puckett, 33, of Illinois, have been charged with importing dogs into the Commonwealth of Virginia from another state without certificate of veterinary inspection. The charge is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
They're scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 19. A hearing to determine custody of the dogs also will be held that day.
The dogs currently are currently being held at the Loudoun County Animal Shelter.
