26 People Sickened by Carbon Monoxide Leak

COLUMBIA, Md. -- Howard County fire officials said 11 people have been taken to area hospitals after a carbon monoxide leak at a Columbia hotel.

Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Anna Hoffmann said the leak was reported about 6:15 p.m. Thursday at the Sheraton Hotel on Wincopin Circle. She said the hotel has been evacuated, and fire personnel isolated the leak, which was in a basement laundry room. The hotel is being ventilated.

Twenty-six people were sickened, and 11 of them were taken to hospitals with low-level carbon monoxide effects.

The hotel's guests have since been allowed back in to their rooms.
