One person was killed and seven others were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries after a crash Thursday morning in Greenbelt, Maryland.

A man was killed and seven others were taken to hospitals after a five-vehicle crash Thursday morning in Greenbelt, Maryland.

The crash involved a bus and four other vehicles on Greenbelt Road near Kenilworth Avenue, said Prince George's County Fire & EMS spokesman Mark Brady‏.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a Honda was heading west on Greenbelt Road about 9:10 a.m. when the Honda rear-ended a minivan and a bus, said a Prince George's County Police spokesman.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. No one else was in that car.

The seven people taken to hospitals have what are expected to be non-life-threatening injuries, Brady said.

Greenbelt Road was closed in both directions at Kenilworth Avenue for much of the day. Eastbound Greenbelt Road has reopened, but the westbound lanes remained closed as of about 2 p.m., police said. Traffic was being diverted onto Kenilworth.

A haz-mat team was called to the scene to clear spilled fuel from the roadway.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
