1 Killed, 4 Hurt in Fiery Wrong-Way Crash on I-95 in Beltsville

One person was killed and four others were hurt in Beltsville, Maryland, when a car traveling the wrong way on Interstate 95 crashed into three other cars and caught fire, sending plumes of smoke across the road and trapping the driver, police say.

Maryland State Police say a woman who was driving in the wrong lane was killed. Police are investigating the cause of the collision.

Police say the woman was driving a Honda Civic south in the northbound lanes, then crashed head-on into a Mitsubishi Gallant and a BMW 325. Both cars smashed into a fourth vehicle, a Lexus RX350.

The BMW driver was partially thrown through the windshield, police say. Their car stopped in the third lane.

The Honda went into the right shoulder and caught fire, trapping the woman who was driving. She died at the scene, police say.

Police responded to I-95 near Powder Mill Road at about 4:15 a.m. Video from the scene shows at least one car's interior burning as heavy smoke pours out.

One person was taken to the hospital with burn injuries, police said. Police have not identified the woman killed or any of the people injured.

All lanes of I-95 in the area were closed for a period of time, but officials have since reopened all lanes.
