Distracted driving may be to blame for a fatal crash that sent two people to the hospital in Loudoun County, Va., Sunday evening.
An eastbound 2010 Toyota Yaris swerved across the center line on Route 9 near Daley Farm Lane and struck a westbound 1997 Toyota Forerunner head on at about 6:40 p.m., according to Virginia State Police.
The man driving the Yaris died at the scene. The driver, 48-year-old Anna Castro, and passenger, 39-year-old Jose Castro-Rivas, both of Vienna, of the Forerunner were flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The man driving the Yaris was preoccupied with a handheld electronic device right before the crash, according to a witness.
Both people in the Forerunner were wearing seat belts.
Route reopened at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday.
