Police in Charles County are investigating a two-car, wrong-way accident that left two people dead in La Plata.

The accident happened shortly before 4:30 a.m. Sunday in the 9100 block of Crain Highway (Maryland Route 301) at the intersection with Fairground Road. Investigators say a 22-year-old woman was driving a Hyundai Sonata southbound in the northbound lanes when she collided head-on with a Dodge Caravan being driven by a 32-year-old man.

Charles County Police say that the driver of the Dodge died on scene. The woman, who was ejected from the Hyundai, was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No identifying information about either victim was available.

It is not clear why the woman was driving the wrong way. The investigation into the accident is ongoing. Crain Highway has since re-opened to traffic.
