A sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who called and reported himself to police at the home of a woman who had filed a protective order against him in Frederick County, Maryland, authorities say.
The Frederick County Sheriff's Office said someone called 911 about 1:20 a.m. Monday about a man with a gun breaking into a home through a back window on Sandy Spring Lane in Thurmont, Maryland.
While officers were en-route, they learned the possible suspect was suicidal and "implicating suicide by cop," the sheriff's office said. Officers also believed a woman and children were inside the home because a responding officer with the Thurmont Police Department helped a woman at the same address file a protective order against a man just a few hours before.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect in the backyard and saw he had a handgun. They told him to put the gun down, but the suspect refused and continued to walk toward the home, the sheriff's office said.
A deputy with the sheriff's office fired his patrol rifle one time and struck the suspect, 26-year-old Abraham Arellano. He died at the scene.
Deputies discovered there was no one inside the home at the time of the shooting.
Investigators said Arellano was the person who made the call about the male fitting his description breaking into the home with a gun. Arellano had recently moved from the address due to ongoing domestic issues, authorities said.
