1 Dead, 1 Injured in NW DC Shooting

One man was killed and another was injured in a shooting in Northwest Washington early Monday morning. 

The shooting happened at 1:18 a.m. in the 1900 block of 9th Street NW, just one  block from the busy U Street Corridor. 

Phillip Dumbuya, 22, was killed in the shooting. His family said he went to Secret Lounge on 9th Street NW to listen to music. An argument spilled outisde, and shots were fired, his family said.

"It put a big hole in the family's heart," said Dumbuya's aunt Hannah Johnson. "It's unbelievable. Nobody believes this happened. Nobody believed Phillip is gone until we go to identify Phillip. It's a shock to the whole family."

Dumbuya was a student at Montgomery College and wanted to be a social worker.

Police notified his father, Samuel Dumbuya, about 4 a.m.

"How can somebody hold a gun and shoot somebody?" he said. 

Police said a second victim was taken to a hospital for surgery.

There are several surveillance cameras in the area that investigators will review.
