Grapes Every Day May Keep Doctor Away

Experts: Antioxidants The Key Compound

If a dash of salt is good, and more than that is even better -- then you may want to have some grapes with that meal.

A University of Michigan study found a diet rich in grapes combats the negative effects of a salty diet by lowering blood pressure and improving heart function.

It was a rat study, so they haven't proven that this happens for humans. The researchers picked rats who, like millions of Americans, suffered from high blood pressure and were likely to develop heart disease. The rats didn't actually eat grapes -- they got grape powder -- but it was the equivalent of nine human sized servings every day for 18 weeks.

Scientists believe the protective compound in grapes is also in all fruits and vegetables.
