All-Day Energy: Fighting Off Fatigue

What to do to get through your day

Sometimes you need a pick-me-up to help you get through the day. But before you reach for that fourth cup of coffee to battle fatigue, there are some things you might want to know that should give you the burst of energy you need.

Instead of reaching for that caffeine fix, some experts say what you really need to do is get moving.

Dr. Loretta DiPietro, professor of exercise science at George Washington University, recommends that for every hour you spend sitting down, get up and walk around for at least five minutes.

You can do things like climb the stairs or go outside. All of these exercises are designed to get your heart pumping and blood flowing. That's on top of the 45 minutes of daily exercise.

DiPietro is also a fan of “the necessary nap.”  She said a short nap during the day can rejuvenate you, especially if you didn't get enough sleep the night before.

DiPietro also strongly believes that you have to unplug and unwind. That means, when you get home from work, try turning off your cell phones, close your laptops and step away from your computers.

And if you really do need an afternoon fix, eat crunchy fruits and veggies and make room for protein. The worst thing you can eat is a sugary snack -- so no more candy bars, donuts and caramel lattes.

DiPietro also said you have to be proactive. If you eat right, exercise and get enough rest, you can fight fatigue and get that burst of energy throughout the day.

Some other ways to combat fatigue:

  • Wake up at the same time every day
  • If you can, bathe yourself in light (open your curtains)
  • Meditate in short, frequent sessions (deep breathing)
  • Listen to music
  • Read a book
