WASHINGTON -- The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments warns in a new report that people and workplaces in and around D.C. will have to sharply reduce greenhouse gas emissions to prevent "potentially catastrophic consequences."
The report by local officials from D.C., Maryland and Virginia says an expected influx of new residents over the next 20 years could create more air and water pollution, threatening health and the regional economy.
The report said governments, businesses and residents should cut greenhouse gas emissions 10 percent below forecast levels by 2012, 20 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050. It also recommends that local governments jointly purchase energy and set up a program to promote recycling, water conservation and less driving.
