Hurricane Bill Now Category 4 Storm

Summer's first hurricane strengthens

Let's hope cooler temperatures kill Bill.

Hurricane hunters said Bill strengthened to a Category 4 storm Tuesday night with winds swirling near 135 mph off the Atlantic, The Associated Press reported.

"The wind sheer is light and the waters are warm," Todd Kimberlain, a forecaster at the National Hurricane Center told the AP. "Those are two essential ingredients not just for the formation, but also the maintenance, of hurricanes."

Bill, the first hurricane of the summer, is centered about 460 miles east of the Leeward islands and is moving west-northwest. Bermuda faces the biggest threat from the killer storm, but Bill could also avoid making landfall as it approaches the islands this weekend. Either way, it is not expected to hit the U.S. mainland.
