A shooting at a Coast Guard recruiting office near Potomac Mills Mall in Prince William County, Va., has been linked to four other shootings involving military locations in the area, the FBI said.
In the latest shooting, which took place late Monday or early Tuesday, a window was damaged but not broken. Employees discovered evidence of a shooting Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported.
An unknown shooter first took aim on the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va,. in mid-October. At least 10 rounds hit the building. A few days later, five to seven shots were fired at the Pentagon. The shooter next shot at a Marine Corps recruiting station in Chantilly, Va., before again targeting the museum, which is associated with the Quantico Marine Base.
Investigators have not identified a suspect, FBI spokeswoman Lindsay Godwin said Wednesday. Details about the kind of gun used have not been disclosed. Investigators previously have said it appeared that the shots were fired from a high-powered rifle.
Investigators said last week they believe the shooter has an issue with the Marine Corps and they are working under the assumption that he is or was a member of the Marines.
John Perren, the acting assistant director for the Washington field office, said investigators believed the shooter may take issue with the institution of the Marines, but not those in uniform.
Perren said the shooter has made efforts to ensure sure no one has been hurt, firing on the buildings at night, and authorities don't believe the shooter wants to harm anyone.
