‘Virgin' Actor Will Be Tried in Stabbing

An actor who appeared in the "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" has been ordered to stand trial in the stabbing of his former girlfriend in San Diego County.

Shelley Malil played a co-worker, Haziz, to comedian Steve Carell's title character in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." Malil also starred in a Budweiser ad, a spinoff of the "Whassup" spots from 2000.

A Superior Court judge ruled Wednesday that enough evidence exists to try Shelley Malil on premeditated attempted murder and other charges.

Malil is accused of stabbing Kendra Beebe 23 times last August in her back yard. A district attorney's office investigator said Beebe told her she knew Malil for about a year but ended the relationship when he became "very possessive and jealous."

Beebe was stabbed 23 times. The North County Times reported that "some gouges [were] so deep her lung collapsed, according to Dr. Thomas Velky, the trauma surgeon who operated on her." One wound came very close to her carotid artery.

"Had it hit that artery, she would have likely been dead at the scene," Dr. Thomas Velky, the trauma surgeon who operated on her, told the court.

Prosecutors said Malil could face life in prison if convicted of all charges.
