Members of Turkey's armed forces attempted to take control of the country on Friday, July 15, 2016, as explosions, gunfire and a reported air battle between loyalist forces and coup supporters erupted in the capital. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan remained defiant, promising to make the people participating in the coup "pay for this in the harshest way."
