A Fredericksburg man has his late father’s dog tag back through the generosity of an Australian memorabilia collector, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star.
"It's a good feeling to have it back home," George Carter Jr. told the Free Lance-Star. "I have very little that belonged to my father, fishing poles and tools and so forth. This is the top of the list."
His father, George B. Carter Sr., fought in the South Pacific and lost his tag while serving at Guadacanal. He died in 2001.
Australian collector Clinton Kempnich returned the tag after finding it among a box full of items from a friend who had been a diver in the South Pacific. Kempnich ended up reaching Carter through the Free Lance-Star.
