A woman who tried to break up a fight was seriously injured after someone poured gasoline on her and lit her on fire, D.C. police say.
The assault happened on the 200 block of 37th Street SE at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say Stephanie Chase Wheeler had been trying to break up a fight involving her daughter when she was set on fire.
Someone from the group drove Wheeler more than a mile to the 4200 block of Minnesota Avenue to find help. First responders from a nearby fire station helped get her to a hospital, where she is in critical but stable condition.
Police say the case is being investigated as an aggravated assault. The suspect fled the scene after the fire, according to police. They face a charge of malicious wounding.
