Outdoor Activities to Keep You Busy this Winter

Fight the cold weather and find fun outdoors this winter.

Great Falls Park is the 800-acre park located along the Potomac River. It’s open from 7 a.m. until dark. Enjoy tranquil river viewing, fishing, boating, and bird watching at the park. Great Fall also offers climbing opportunities and horsebacking riding for those who own horses. It’s a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday or to spend quality time with family. Guided tours are also offered throughout the year. Skating is always a fun winter event! The rink at the National Gallery of Art is open from Nov. 15 until mid-March. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $7 for adults and $6 for children 12 and younger, seniors, and students for two-hour sessions. Skate rentals are $3.

Hemlock Overlook Center for Experiential Education is an outdoor learning center with a variety of fun activities for all to enjoy. Visitors can stay overnight to take full advantage of all the center has to offer. Located along Fairfax County, VA, the center offers historians a rare treat with its Civil War history and 17-mile Bull Run Occoquan Trail. There are activities for those of all ages, and a 42element low and high challenge course. Its close proximity to Fountainhead Regional Park allows for the center to include water-based activities like boating, nature study and angling.

Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium has fun and exciting venues as well. The park offers free ranger led programs including Nature Center, Old Stone House, Military Field and Battleground National Cemetery. There are also special ranger programs that change daily. Coming up this month is the Native American Night Sky on Saturday Nov. 15, and the Creature Feature on Friday Nov. 21. The park is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Clemyjontri Park is the park dedicated to keeping children busy and active. It’s two-acre long and features four different outdoor spaces: The Rainbow Room, The Schoolhouse and Maze, the Moovin’ and Groovin’ Transportation Area and Fitness and Fun. All of the areas are dedicated to teaching the children something in addition to providing a great space for exercise. Children of all abilities and ages are welcome. The park is open from 7 a.m. to Dusk.
